Dear MBRC Members,
As detailed in our 2018 Program Handbook on our website, MBRC have a policy of mandatory cognitive function "concussion" baseline testing for all our athletes – something that is becoming more and more common in both professional and amateur sport. MBRC firmly believes this is in the best interest of all our athletes, including Masters, and our coaches are also given concussion recognition and management briefings at the start of each season.
This year the test will be emailed directly to each athlete with a link to take the concussion test which is in the form of an on-line game of cards. There is a practice test on the website, so athletes can get as comfortable with it as they like, before undertaking the actual test. It is really easy and quite fun.
There is also a video demonstration of what the test involves and it is simple to do and only takes a few minutes. This website is run by one of Australia’s leading concussion management specialists, Dr Ryan Kohler. MBRC have been working with Dr Kohler on our concussion management program for sometime now.
Doing a baseline test allows the athlete, parents and treating medical staff to document a score for the athlete’s “normal” state brain function. Hence, if the athlete has a suspected concussion during the season, they can retake the test when they are able, and compare that score to their “normal” baseline score, this also forms part of our concussion policy which is being updated for the 2018 season.
How do I take the test?
Follow the on-line instructions to take a test, using your voucher code that will be sent to you in a seperate email by Headsmart.
What happens to the results?
The score for each test is stored in the Headsmart database in the cloud. In addition, the athlete will be emailed their test result.
When do we need to get the baseline done by?
All athletes must have done a baseline test before the MBRC season starts on Saturday 30th June 2018. No baseline test, no skiing with MBRC.
What if we have questions?
There is a large amount of information available on the web regarding concussion. In particular, look at the Headsmart website. http://headsmart.me
